PROJECT DESCRIPTION Wasdom is a youth centre located on the grounds of a Dominican Monastery in the city centre of Zwolle, The Netherlands. The Netherlands is located in Northwestern Europe. The capital is Amsterdam and the seat of government is The Hague. The Netherlands is often called Holland. The word Dutch is used to refer to the people, the language, and anything pertaining to the Netherlands. The Netherlands is a geographically low-lying country, with about 20% of its area and its population located below sea level preserved through a system of polders and dikes. The Netherlands is known for its windmills, tulips, clogs, delftware, gouda cheese, visual artists, bicycles, traditional values, and civil virtues such as its social tolerance. Zwolle is an old Hanzecity in the Northeast part of the Netherlands situated along the river IJssel. Zwolle has a beautiful historic city center where you can still feel the rich history and tradition of the city. Zwolle is also a modern city, the vivid capital of the province Overijssel with over 118.000 inhabitants, and a large student population. The Dominican monastery is situated right next to the inner circle of the historic city centre of Zwolle. The Dominican Order is a Catholic religious order of Preachers and value study, encounter, dialogue and charity. The Dominican monastery is very much involved in the society and the local community is very much involved in the monastery. Residents, workers and volunteers underscribe the philosophy "having an open dialogue with people who think differently". On the grounds of the Dominican monastery, on the second floor of the former laundry and bakery, youth centre 't WasdoM is situated. The atmosphere of the nearby monastery gives 't WasdoM it's unique face. Typical for the Dominical philosophy is: - maintaining an open dialogue with people who think differently - searching for what is meaningful and important in every day life-experiences - A life style which is going beyond materialistic values - Hospitality to people who need an safe place to stay or to work
HOUSE RULES The foundations of the youth centre has been established through the Dominican Monastery and hence there are still strong ties with the church and its surroundings. Therefore all volunteers should be willing and open to doing voluntary work within a Christian environment. In general an open mind, respect for yourself and other people and good social skills are very important in order to live together with 'strangers' in one house for 10 months.
PROPOSED ACTIVITIES FOR THE VOLUNTEER In the first eight weeks there is time to learn Dutch and to get to know the organization and the city. Our volunteers are the host persons of our youth centre 't WasdoM. Every volunteer gets own tasks in the organization which will take about one day a week Besides tasks within the monastery there is also room for new activities according to their interests. We actively stimulate our volunteers to develop and try new activities. Examples of the tasks and possibilities are: >>> Voluntary work in 't WasdoM Every volunteer in the group will partake in the following tasks within the youth centre: - Supporting the youth groups which use the centre. Two times a week, during evening or afternoon; (3 hours per week) - Guiding and providing support for the Youth centre-pub for students. Duties involves group work with participants, the coordination of meal preparation etc. (3 hours per week) - Being the host for 't WasdoM Youth centre; keeping the kitchen, arranging materials for the groups and facilitating bookings (5 hours per week) >>> Voluntary work in the Dominican monastery Every volunteer can choose one of the following tasks: - Assisting in keeping the garden of the monastery (3 hours per week) - Showing groups around the Dominican monastery (3 hours a week) - Assisting in building up courses and exhibitions in the monastery (3 hours a week) >>> Voluntary work in the local community Every volunteer shall choose one of the following tasks: - Supporting young asylum seekers; assisting them in doing home-work and helping them in having contacts with bureaucratic institutions - Volunteering work at the drop-in centre for homeless people; helping at the bar - Volunteering work at the pop-centre; organizing pop-events and build up exhibitions - Building up a theatre-project with mentally disabled people - Being a buddy for elderly people for example having a walk and a talk with them. - Doing youth-work activities in one of the church congregations of Zwolle Volunteers also have the opportunity to work on other activities. These will be defined according to the aspirations and experiences of each individual volunteer. In effect each volunteer creates his or her own program to suit their needs, experiences and interests.
HOST ORGANISATION WasdoM is a meeting place for young people aged 18 - 30 year; a place where you find new people and new ideas. Young people are invited to think about their personal history and future, family and friends, social and political environment and the world we live in. Our encounter and dialogue is based on mutual respect for ourselves and others. In 't WasdoM young people find space for their unique selves and learn to make space for the uniqueness of others. Activities: - Place to meet - Participate in one of the youth programs - Create your own youth program - Coaching - Visit the monastery and meet the people who live there - Walk-in cafe (for wining and dining) - Youth and student art exhibitions - Inter-religious meeting and dialogue - Exchange program - Voluntary work - European Voluntary Service 't WasdoM has a group of international volunteers organized through the EVS scheme. These young volunteers get the opportunity to experience the reality of youth work and other voluntary services in and around the city of Zwolle. Their diverse backgrounds, cultures and experiences bring a new perspective to youth centre 't WasdoM. Volunteers are actively participating in all aspects of 't WasdoM. There is an active exchange of views between Dutch people involved in the youth centre and these EVS volunteers. 't Wasdom pays special attention to the formation of these volunteers. That means apart from their volunteer work, there is also time to talk, think and work around themes concerning matters such as religion, society and those around us. The co-ordination of activities is carried out by the supervisors of 't WasdoM project hence the program is made by the youth workers, but volunteers have influence in what they would like to discuss. Each week there is time to reflect on experiences and learning. The international volunteers live together as a small international community in a house, named 't DAK (the roof) nearby 't WasdoM. |
