Coordinating organisation: BHH Sozialkontor gGmbH Host Organisation: BHH Sozialkontor / Kirchdorf Süd Location: Hamburg, Germany Project code / HO EI Ref.: 2011-DE-211 Start: 01/03/2013 End: 28/02/2014 Theme 1: Disability Theme 2: Minorities
PROJECT ENVIRONMENT The meeting point "Treffpunkt Kirchdorf Süd (KDS)" is a project of BHH Sozialkontor (BHH) in the south of Hamburg. It is a meeting and counselling point for people with and without diasbilities. Nearby, there is an ambulant assisted living community for people with disabilities (AWG Kirchdorf Süd). Since 2010 several volunteers from different countries enriched the work of the meeting point with their special capacities and ideas. In total, the BHH hosts up tp 11 volunteers each year since 1997, one of them in KDS. The residence centres, ambulant assisted living apartments and ambulant counselling services of the BHH SOZIALKONTOR are situated throughout Hamburg. Hamburg has a population of 1.7 million and is one of the largest cities in Germany. Because of its university, its harbour and many cultural, social and touristic atractions there are many things to do in leisure time. The meeting point and the AWG Kirchdorf Süd are situated in the south of Hamburg, in Wilhelmsburg. In Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg live 60.000 people (30 % foreigners and many people with immigration background). Wilhelmsburg is after Manhattan the second biggest inhabited island in the middle of a river and is embedded in the river Elbe. Kirchdorf Süd is a skyscraper quarter that was built up in the 1970ies because of the lack of apartments. It takes 6 minutes by bus to get there from the old Wilhelmsburg. It is embedded in fields and one-familiy houses around. During the last years the infrastructure had been ameliorated a lot and many social institutions are now situated in this quarter which has a lot of social problems.
PROPOSED ACTIVITIES FOR THE VOLUNTEER The volunteers give individuals or groups of disabled persons the chance to take part in the social and cultural life of Hamburg. In the following there are some examples for typical activities of European volunteers: - individual company of certain residents during leisure time activities - company of small groups for leisure time activities (e.g. cultural activities, sport) - equal experiences and common learning of disabled persons (as local experts) and European volunteers (as leisure time animate) - development of his or her own cultural projects according to the volunteer’s ideas and abilities (e.g. theatre project, making a film, organizing a day trip, internet project) - working in one of the existing projects and bring in his or her own ideas (e.g. internet café)
WORKING HOURS The volunteer works 35 hours on 5 days per week. There is an entitlement to holidays for 2.5 days per month. Usually the volunteer works during the day, but sometimes also in the evening and during the weekend (e.g. activities like concerts, events, festivals). If there are social activities with the disabled in the evening or at the weekend, the volunteer will be compensated with extra days off for his/her participation in these activities. Example of a weekly schedule for a volunteer: (35 hours/five days a week) Monday 10:00-12:00 social meeting point: breakfast offer for visitors 12:00-17:00 supporting people with disabilities in the ambulant assisted apartments Tuesday 10:00 - 12:00: meeting of all the European volunteers of the BHH to plan common projects and to share the experiences 14:00-18:00 social meeting point: helping at the "creative cafe" Wednesday 11:30-13:00 reflection conversation with the EVS-tutor/supervisor 13:00-16:00 staff meeting of the ambulant assisted living apartments 16:00-18:00 social meeting point: games afternoon Thursday 13:00 - 19:00: supporting people with disabilties in the ambulant assisted living apartments Friday: 12:00-15:00 learning to know another project of the BHH gGmbH 15:00-20:00 meeting point: preparation and realisation of the "International cooking" Saturday and Sunday free
LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES The young volunteer can gain great experience by living with other young people and part-taking in the EVS-project. For example: - Getting to know the life of adults with mental and / or physical disabilities - Experiencing the different support systems in the work with disabled people that lay focus on the emancipation of disabled people - Getting to know the work of the different occupational groups engaged in the work with disabled people (professional staff, young people doing their alternative civilian service or voluntary social year, other European volunteers) and exchange experiences - Developing their own ideas, realising their personal interests and abilities in the daily work - Getting to know different ways of living by working and living together with people with different cultural backgrounds (learning, to deal with foreign people and unfamiliar situations, dealing with conflicts, that might arise from different points of views and experiences) - Getting to know social and cultural activities in Hamburg and its surrounding areas
VOLUNTEER'S PROFILE We wish to welcome young people, who bring along initiative, flexibility and creativity. This is important, because during your European voluntary service you get the chance to realize your own ideas and interests. As you are working with human beings it is important that you adjust yourself to the individual disabled person and bring along empathy. Of course we would like you to be really interested in the contact with disabled people. For the contact with the disabled people it is also very important that you are motivated to learn German also outside the language course. Also you should be interested in cultural activities because the focus of your volunteer’s tasks lies in the cultural area (e.g. organizing or accompanying leisure time activities of disabled persons).
HOST ORGANISATION 6 days a week the meeting and counselling point "Treffpunkt Kirchdorf Süd" is open for visitors with and without disabilities and immigration background living in the quarter. There are different offers like breakfast, games, handicraft, international cooking and café on Sunday. There is one permanent employee and several people who work freelance. The members of staff counsel the visitors when they have questions about disabilities, living, psychosocial support, etc.. Once a month a trip will be organised and everybody is welcome to join it. Sometimes there are seminares for people with and without disabilities. The ambulant assisted living community (AWG) Kirchdorf Süd is connected to the meeting point. Currently, 9 people with disabilities live there in several apartments. They get the support they need from 3 members of staff and one manager from the BHH. The support focusses on the personal needs and has the aim towards a self-determined life: - different offers for living and support - support in the everyday life (going shopping, cooking, washing clothes, going to the doctor or to the authorities, orientation in the surroundings) - support to develop an own lifetime perspective or to solve problems - support to integrate in the social environment - support and assistance for the leisure time and cultural activities through individual and group activities |
