The EVS project will take place in Lisbon, capital of Portugal and its largest city as well as cultural, administrative, commercial and industrial center. Lisbon is a legendary city with over 20 centuries of History. A city of art, architecture, culture, traditions and atmosphere, It is built on seven low hills by Tejo River, enjoying an especially sunny position on the coastline of the European Atlantic Ocean. Its municipality counts with a population of around 600 thousand in 84,8 km2, while the Lisbon Metropolitan Area in total has around 2.8 million inhabitants. The Lisbon region is the wealthiest region in Portugal - it produces 45% of the Portuguese GDP. It is also the political center of the country, as seat of government and residence of the Head of State. The capital has a Mediterranean climate that is strongly influenced by the Gulf Stream, giving it one of the mildest climates in Europe. Boasting springtime temperatures during the winter and cool summers freshened by a breeze blowing in from the Atlantic. The public transport network in the capital is extremely far-reaching and reliable, having as its main artery the Subway, which connects the city centre with the upper and eastern districts, and now also reaching the suburbs.
There are expansion projects which will increase the network by almost one third, connecting the airport, and the northern and western districts. The other means of transportation (bus, funicular and tram services) are supplied by the Companhia de Carris de Lisboa. The volunteers will work mainly in Carnide, one of the 53 parishes of Lisbon, located in the northern area of the Portuguese capital city. Carnide is one of the biggest civil parishes of Lisbon, in terms of expansion and population. Originally rural, Carnide was involved in the last decades in the urban growth process of a capital, in an accelerated way, not always standardized or correctly programmed. That is the reason why it is an area of contrasts - between old and new, the ancient and the modern, the urban and the rural. It is also a territory marked by diversities and singularities. According with the last Census of 2001,Carnide has 21 097 inhabitants in an area of 4,02 km² with a density of 5251,9 inhabitants/km². It is being noticed a dynamic connected with the population growth (essentially young population) which presents a vitality sign. This area of the town it is marked by its contrasts, as around 50% of the population lives in social neighborhoods but it has a big social and economical diversity. The main sector of activity in this area is commerce and services. In what concerns occupation, according with 2001 data, there was 8683 employed people, 3258 pensioners, 1535 students, 594 domestic workers and 631 unemployed. Carnide Parish Council´s office is located in Largo das Pimenteiras, very close to two subway stations, providing easy access to the center of Lisbon. The office is easily reachable by metro (blue line) and buses and has several urban facilities in its surroundings (supermarket, shopping mall, hospitals, schools, gardens, etc).
