Host Organisation: Amber Initiatives Location: Plymouth, United Kingdom Project code / HO EI Ref.: 2009-GB-72 Start: 01/02/2013 End: 01/02/2014
PROJECT ENVIRONMENT The project will take place in the city of Plymouth, our main base. We want the volunteers to visit and support our other centres in Cornwall, with a view to developing further full-time EVS hosting in the other towns. Plymouth has a large migrant worker community, which is now fairly well established as part of the city. Many people have been here for some years, so there is a good deal of stability in the community we work with. Amber is now well established as a valuable support / activities organisation for the migrant worker community. We are part of the professional sector that works with and supports multiculturalism, immigration and integration, with strong links to statutory bodies and other support structures. We have a strong volunteer base and a lot of regular activities that the EVS volunteers can join Our new office will be used for our core activity - Information, advice and guidance service for migrant workers from Eastern Europe as well as for other integration activities: Youth Club, Women Group, meeting with community, discussion club, Community Safety Programme. We have 28 volunteers working with us at the present. They involve in different projects and activities. The EVS volunteers will be part of our team, working in Plymouth office.
VOLUNTEER'S TASKS The MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES of the Long Term Volunteer (12 months) are to support and deliver the Family Support Programme, Community Safety Programme and Youth project as well as general activity of the organisation. This includes helping the organisation to provide support for migrant workers community as well as public bodies through individual support. EVS EXPERIENCE We are an international organisation, in the sense that most of our staff, and nearly all our local volunteers and users, are recent migrants into the UK. We run a wide range of intercultural and support services and activities, and work across Plymouth and Cornwall. We therefore feel that Amber would be an ideal environment for EVS volunteers.
HOST ORGANISATION Amber Initiatives was formed in 2005 to provide a practical advice and advocacy service for newly arrived migrant workers from Eastern Europe. The organisation currently has over 3000 migrants on its contact list. Our work has expanded greatly since we started: From our base in Plymouth in the South West of England, we have expanded to offer support in towns across Cornwall. In addition to advice and guidance, we have extended our support to include an integration programme (intercultural activities), English classes, information events, sport, and leisure activities. We have 2 paid staff and 28 locally based volunteers, the great majority of whom are themselves migrants. The organisation is registered as a not-for-profit company. |
