World Press Photo Contest
World Press Photo is committed to supporting and advancing high standards in photojournalism and documentary photography worldwide. They strive to generate wide public interest in and appreciation for the work of photographers and for the free exchange of information.
Their activities include organizing an annual contest, exhibitions, the stimulation of photojournalism through educational programs, and creating greater visibility for press photography through a variety of publications.
The World Press Photo contest invites entries in the following categories:
- General news
- Spot news
- Contemporary issues
- Daily life
The World Press Photo contest is only open to professional photographers and photojournalists.
The jury will award first, second and third prizes in all categories. First-prize winners in each category will receive a cash prize of €1,500. Winners of second and third prizes and those awarded an Honorable Mention receive a Golden Eye Award and a diploma. The premier award, the World Press Photo of the Year, carries a cash prize of €10,000.
In addition, Canon will donate a professional camera and lens kit to the author of the World Press Photo of the Year 2013. The annual Awards Days, a celebration of the prizewinners, will take place in Amsterdam from 24 to 25 April 2014.
The 2014 World Press Photo Contest will be open for participants to enter their work from the beginning of December 2013. The deadline for submissions will be 15 January 2014, 23.59 CET.
Entries may only be submitted online. A user name and password are required to enter and can be requested from December 2013 onwards. The deadline for requesting a user name and password will be 9 January 2014, 23.59 CET.
The results of the contest will be announced on 14 February 2014 in a press conference and on the World Press Photo website. The prize-winning pictures will be presented in an exhibition that will travel through more than 100 cities in over 45 countries, beginning in Amsterdam on 18 April 2014.
